Hintermodal

Hintermodal is a joint venture between DP World Antwerp N.V. and Shipit N.V.. It is the result of more than 2 years of cooperation for the development of a new concept, Terminal Operator Haulage.

The objective

The objective of Hintermodal is the organization of hintBarge 1erland connections from and to the container terminals of DP World Antwerp. The main focus is on Antwerp Gateway, DP World’s newest and modern container terminal located at the new Deurganckdok in Antwerp and soon capable of handling 3,5 million TEU through the most advanced handling technologies. This future high concentration of containers in a newly developed area of  the Antwerp Port made DP World realize that it is necessary as terminal operator to increase the attractiveness of its terminals by actively promoting their accessibility.

For this purpose, DP World Antwerp called for the assistance of Shipit N.V., a company specialized in multimodal transportation.

As a mainly non-asset service provider, Shipit N.V. focusses on the organization and coordination of hinterland transport in the most efficient way.

This new service is called Terminal Operator Haulage.

 

The service

Hintermodal can offer its customers a full sBarge 2ervice for all transport activities from discharging the ocean-going vessel to the final receiver in the hinterland and vice versa. The aim is to use as much inland navigation, shortsea and rail to come to a modal split of 40 % road, 40% barge and 20 % rail (in 2004 still 60% road, 30% barge and 10% rail).

This is obtained by subcontracting existing services where available or by developping and establishing new services where necessary.

The services we offer include:

•          All handlings on the deepsea terminal

•          On-carriage to inland hub or final destination using:

        • Barge
        • Rail
        • Shortsea
        • Truck
        • Or a combination

•          Documentation and customs clearance

•          Equipment control

 

The benefits

One of the benefits for our customers is that they only need to have one point of contact to organize their hinterland connection from discharging the ocean vessel to the final destination. As a neutral party, Shipit N.V. can combine volumes of different customers to obtain critical volumes for point-to-point connections and to create economies of scale.
